ABCC11

ABCC11 encodes an ATP-binding cassette (ABC) membrane transporter expressed in apocrine sweat glands and the cerumen (earwax) glands, where it pumps organic anions and odor-precursor lipids/steroids across the cell membrane for secretion. The common coding variant rs17822931 (Gly180Arg) inactivates the transporter: carriers of the variant allele produce dry, flaky earwax and secrete far fewer odor precursors from apocrine glands (little to no underarm odor), while the ancestral allele produces wet earwax and typical body-odor precursor output.
