FTO

FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated gene) encodes an RNA demethylase that removes N6-methyladenosine marks from RNA transcripts, and in hypothalamic neurons this activity influences appetite regulation, energy balance, and adipocyte differentiation. The intronic variant rs9939609 tags the strongest and most replicated common genetic signal for body-mass index and obesity risk, with risk-allele carriers tending toward higher appetite and greater weight gain.
