SORT1
SORT1 encodes sortilin, a receptor that sorts proteins between the cell surface, the Golgi and lysosomes and that helps the liver handle apolipoprotein B-containing lipoproteins. It is the gene most strongly implicated at the 1p13 locus, where the common marker rs12740374 creates a C/EBP transcription-factor binding site and changes SORT1 expression in liver. This is one of the largest common-variant effects on blood LDL cholesterol, but the locus contains three genes and a person's result is not a measured sortilin level.
