The C allele is associated with increased AHR transcriptional activity, which upregulates CYP1A2, the enzyme responsible for more than 95% of caffeine metabolism, and has been repeatedly linked in GWAS and candidate-gene studies to higher habitual coffee and caffeine consumption. It is used as a marker for caffeine intake tendency, i.e., how much caffeine a person is genetically inclined to consume.
