In a genome-wide association meta-analysis of olfactory identification it was the strongest signal for the ability to identify pineapple odor, and methylation-QTL colocalization analysis implicated OR4A16 among the candidate causal olfactory receptor genes at this locus. It is used together with OR5A2 rs61902559 to characterize pineapple-smell identification ability.
