rs671 is the ALDH2 Glu504Lys missense variant. The A allele lowers mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 activity, so acetaldehyde can build up after alcohol. In reviewed East Asian cohorts, each A copy was linked to a higher chance of facial flushing after a small amount of alcohol. The marker does not guarantee a reaction or determine how strong it will feel.
