ABCG2 encodes an ATP-binding cassette efflux transporter, also known as BCRP (breast cancer resistance protein), expressed in the kidney, liver, and intestine, where it exports urate and a broad range of drug substrates — including several statins — out of cells and into urine or bile. The common Q141K variant (rs2231142) reduces transporter activity, which raises blood uric acid and gout risk while also altering renal/intestinal handling and blood levels of certain statins and urate-lowering medications.
