FUT2
FUT2 encodes fucosyltransferase 2, an enzyme that adds fucose sugars onto glycoproteins in mucosal secretions, determining whether ABO/Lewis blood-group antigens are secreted into saliva, gut mucus, and other bodily fluids ("secretor status"). Loss-of-function variants such as rs601338 make a person a non-secretor, which alters gut mucosal glycan availability and shifts the composition of certain gut bacteria, and FUT2 variants including rs602662 are also associated with circulating vitamin B12 levels through effects on intestinal absorption and transport.
