G6PD
G6PD makes an enzyme that protects red blood cells from stress. Confirmed deficiency can cause red blood cells to break down after certain medicines, infections, or fava beans. CPIC classifies medicines by risk; high-risk examples include rasburicase, dapsone, tafenoquine, and standard-dose primaquine. DNA alone cannot predict enzyme activity for every genotype.
