rs113851554

rs113851554 is a common intronic variant in MEIS1 on chromosome 2, a gene previously implicated in restless legs syndrome, insomnia, and chronotype. In a genome-wide association study of device-measured sleep in roughly 80,000 UK Biobank participants, it was the lead signal for sleep-stage balance, associated with longer REM sleep duration and shorter NREM sleep duration in opposite directions, with a posterior probability of causality near 100%. It is used with two other MEIS1 intronic variants (rs4544423, rs182588061) and KCNK9 rs888346 to inform genetic REM-versus-NREM sleep architecture.
