GC encodes the group-specific component protein, also known as vitamin D binding protein (VDBP), the primary carrier protein that transports vitamin D and its metabolites (including 25-hydroxyvitamin D) through the bloodstream to target tissues. Variants such as rs4588 and rs2282679 change the binding-protein structure and circulating levels, and are among the most robust genetic determinants of measured vitamin D status identified in GWAS, including how vitamin D levels respond to sun exposure and supplementation.
