TAS2R38 encodes a bitter-taste receptor on taste bud cells that detects thiourea-containing compounds, most notably phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) and propylthiouracil (PROP). Haplotypes built from its three common coding variants (rs713598, rs1726866, rs10246939) determine whether a person is a strong "taster" or a "non-taster" of these bitter compounds, the classic basis for individual differences in bitter-taste sensitivity.
